2012 Clear Lake Boat Lane Parade

Eighty colorfully decorated boats circled around Clear Lake, through the Kemah channel, out to Galveston Bay and back.  With perfect weather as an ally, the spirited crews were able to concentrate on their ‘performances’ as they passed in front of the judges.  Traditional Christmas themes were in splendor throughout the evening while others opted for unique approaches to this friendly competition but all were beautiful.  Enjoy the photos!

The weather was almost perfect for this event that drew hundreds of thousands of bikers. The rally had plenty to do and see including great entertainment. This year the rally had a larger presence at the seawall where the likes of Bret Michaels and Randy Rogers performed free. Nearly 1000 riders set off early on Saturday morning including a unicyclist.  Their quest was to circumnavigate Galveston Bay in a 190 mile two day ride, hosted by Galveston Bay Foundation (GBF). In its 6th year, this ride continues to grow in popularity throughout the cycling community. On Thursday, Sept. 13, twelve lively Villagers strutted down the Hope Village runway opening the 2012 Hope Village Mad Hatter Tea Party and Luncheon. Filled to capacity, more than 200 guests enjoyed the fun at the Mad Hatter themed luncheon. Following the Villagers, community models brought the beautiful fashions from The Clotheshorse and Jill’s Fashion and Bridal to life; beautiful casual outfits to gorgeous formal gowns were featured throughout the show. 2012 Redfish Raft Up

More than 150 boats loaded with family and friends enjoyed the only concert on Galveston bay; the annual Redfish Raftup featuring live music by the bay area’s own Kelly McGuire.  Huge cargo ships passing through the Intercoastal Canal created a unique back drop for Starfleet’s beautiful Stargazer and the rest of the vessels anchored around Redfish Island. After a huge effort, League City’s 100 year old Ghirardi Compton Oak has been lifted out of the ground, transported and replanted 1500 feet away, in a water smart park.

Well we finally have a shuttle here in the bay area. Yes it is a mock-up but it is awesome and HUGE. The drive from Costa del Sol to the Coasta Blanca region was about 7 hours long. We traveled through the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains making our way to the eastern coastline. Holy Toledo! On our way to the Mija Costa area we visited the village of Toledo, located in Central Spain. There we visited the Cathedral Primada, the leading cathedral in Spain. Again, I say Holy Toledo, it is gorgeous and truly “reflects the grandeur of God”. We opted to do the self-guided tour using a hand held audio tour recorder. More than $17,000 Raised for Disabled Vets! $5000 of those funds came from Lou Savarese’s willingness to auction off his hair….that’s right, he gave the winning bidder the right to cut off his beautiful hair all in honor of those who battle for our freedom and that was just the beginning. The beautiful spring day was a great backdrop for the swimsuit stage of the Miss Kemah & Miss Teen Kemah competition. Held on the FantaSea, a beauty herself, the vessel was filled to capacity with media representatives, judges and of course gorgeous contestants.  Fourteen (14) teens competed for the Miss Teen Kemah and twelve (12) young women competed for the title of Miss Kemah; all of these beauties charmed and mesmerized those on board. Listen in with the Talk of the Bay...

More than 60,000 pounds of crawfish were consumed by happy visitors to the Under The Bridge Kemah Crawfish Festival.  The goal for the 2012 festival was MORE and more there was.  More crawfish, more festival food, more music and more festival goers.

Each year, the Ball folds around a theme and the participants raise funds in advance of the Ball to benefit Catholic Education. The KiMe Fund was established in 2010 with a mission to find a cure for Parkinson’s by funding research that have the best chance for a cure. Steve Hodges, who grew up in the Houston area, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s at age 48. Since that overwhelming day, Steve decided to establish the KiMe fund. Shorthand for his two daughters, Kim and Megan, KiMe is symbolic of the drive to find a cure for Parkinson’s disease. The city of Seabrook, Tx celebrated its 50th anniversary with a parade through the city which finished up at Rex L. Meader Park. The parade included several floats along with a complete replica of a western stagecoach. The main attraction of the parade was one of NASA’s space Mars rover vehicles. On Saturday October 15th, 2011 the Space City Cruisers held their semi-annual car show at  Walter  Hall Park in League City, Texas. The skies were clear and blue, an absolutely perfect weekend for the annual Wings Over Houston Airshow hosted by the Commemorative Air Force. Thousands of folks were arriving as the ReMax Skydiving Team officially opened the event with O Canada and The Star Spangled Banner; the thrills continued throughout the weekend. Bike Around the Bay 2011

Close to 1000 cyclists gathered up in Fort Anahuac Park early Saturday morning for the annual Bike Around The Bay. Hosted by  the Galveston Bay Foundation (GBF) this 150 mile bike ride is a fund raiser for GBF to assist in the support of Galveston Bay. Wings Media Day

In preparation for the upcoming 27th Wings Over Houston Airshow on Saturday, October 15 and Sunday, October 16 the local media was given a peek at the awesome upcoming show. This annual media day was held on the grounds of Ellington Airport. Some of the media were treated to vintage aircraft rides including Wiredin.cc's own Eddie Harper. Gulf Coast Film Fest 2011

Internationally recognized the Gulf Coast Film & Video Festival celebrated their 13th anniversary this weekend, September 22nd through the 25th. Each year the festival presents a Lifetime Achievement Award. This year’s award recipient was Marsha Mason who’s most popular works include Cinderella Liberty, Goodbye Girl, Only When I Laugh and Heartbreak Ridge. Galaxy Singer and Songwriter competition

A variety of talented bay area folks competed at the first Galaxy Singer & Songwriter competition at The Arts Alliance Center at Clear Lake (TAACCL). Each artist sang and played their original music; from pop, to folk, to country the tunes kept coming. J.R. Jones, originally from East Texas, sang an amusing song about cows, talented Ivy Woolley performs as a street musician in Galveston and Bob Fuller, of Keels & Wheels fame, performed a wonderful folk song…close your eyes so you can see. With friends and family gathered together we headed for the beautiful Riviera Maya region of Mexico.  Located about midway between Cancun and Playa del Carmen, this region of Mexico offers stunning beaches, great fishing, diving and an awesome setting for a wedding. That’s right, I’m delighted to announce that, after a 2 ½ year engagement,  Paul Fjelsta and I were married on July 19 on a beautiful beach at the Grand Mayan resort. Starting out with a downhome Western skit, the Boot Scootin Social was a great time. A group of fun loving Butler Longhorn Musem supporters put together an original skit to entertain guests. 4th of July in Kemah Texas

July 4, 2011 – A Salute to Volunteerism | Kemah

A wonderful small town Fourth of July parade followed by a big town fireworks show, a true 4th of July celebration. Led by Mayor Bob Cummins, the Children’s parade made its way through the Kemah Lighthouse District. Bicycles, wagons, little kids and big kids all decorated in red, white and blue. Following the kids parade, the new mayor of Kemah also led the Salute to Volunteerism parade. Listen in as Talk of the Bay joins in this wonderful Independence Day tradition.

An important part of supporting our troops overseas is to support their loved ones. Jim Stoa, of www.WeCareEvents.com, and his committee do just that. This year, We Care Events honored the 1st Battalion 23 Marine Regiment and their family members. The Ray Joseph Hutchinson Foundation’s 7th Annual Salute to Heroes Reception was held on June 23, 2011 in the Crystal Ballroom at South Shore Harbour Hotel.  The room was filled with a community of people there to honor our military and to support the fundraisings efforts for scholarship money for the Ray Joseph Hutchinson Foundation. Tina Montana

June 19, 2011 – Tina Montana Benefit Concert & Fundraiser | Seabrook

Sunday, June 19 friends of Tina Montana, from around the bay area,  pulled together to raise funds at a concert and benefit for Tina’s children. While riding as a passenger, Tina was killed early Saturday morning (06/11/11) in a tragic car accident. Tina leaves behind FOUR children, Zane (19), Cerise (17), Greg (13) and Alana (10). Marsh Mania Seabrook 2011

Hundreds of volunteers gathered at different locations around Galveston Bay to participate in the second Marsh Mania for 2011. Galveston Bay Foundation (GBF) hosts the event twice, annually. We visited with the folks working in the Clear Lake Forest Park neighborhood. Armed with shovels, marsh grass, smiling faces and generous hearts more than 60 people endured the sun and heat to help restore the shoreline. Leading the effort for GBF was Philip Smith; listen in to Talk of the Bay as Philip explains what the goals are for Marsh Mania.

AIA Sand Castle Competition

June 4, 2011 – AIA Sand Castle Competition | Galveston

A Houston engineering firm, Jacobs of Houston, proved you can “Have Your Sandcastle and Eat it Too” Saturday in Galveston when they took home the first place prize in one of the world’s largest amateur sandcastle competitions. The phrase was the title of their “Golden Bucket” award-winning sandcastle design at the 25th annual AIA SandCastle Competition held on Galveston’s East Beach. Listen in as Talk of the Bay visits with some of the competitors...
